“Matsuoka succeeds brilliantly. On camera in nearly every scene, she brings Yoshika to life with originality, charm and never a false note. Applaud all you want”
Mark Schilling, JAPAN TIMESYoshika (Mayu Matsuoka) is 24 years old and works in the accounting office of a large company. Somewhat eccentric and socially maladroit, she often sleeps at work, enjoys looking up extinct animal species on Wikipedia, and spends most of her days mooning over "Ichi", a former classmate from 10 years ago – to this day, her only flame, with whom she remains madly in love. Then "Ni", a clumsy colleague, burst into her love life... ! And what about Ichi, whose path she crosses at a school alumni reunion? A whirlwind of emotions engulfs Yoshika’s existence, and reality will have to be confronted...
Audience Award-winner at the last Tokyo International Film Festival,
TREMBLE ALL YOU WANT by Akiko Ohku (adapted from Risa Wataya's novel, published in French translation by Éditions Picquier) is a magnificent subversion of the romantic comedy. With a deceptively light tone, Ohku tackles expectations of female characters customary to such stories, and complicates the candy-coated codes that define the genre. Instead, Ohku delivers a sensitive and perceptive film, skillfully playing on the notion of perspective and perception in romantic relationships, while not hesitating to explore the psyche of a character whose mental health, inseparable from her mood, quickly becomes the main issue of the story. Boosted by a virtuoso performance by Matsuoka (seen at Fantasia in
CHIHAYAFURU 1 and
2),
TREMBLE ALL YOU WANT will charm you, to better disarm you, and redefine the conventions of the rom-com before your very eyes.
