“Slick, creative… one of the best Italian animated films of recent years”
Jay Weissberg, VARIETYThe titanic vessel Megaride, laden with strange and potent technological marvels, dropped anchored in the port of Naples, and in the hopes and aspirations of the city’s inhabitants. That is, until treachery took the life of the boat’s visionary builder, Basile, dashing the dreams of better days for Naples and leaving his loving little daughter Mia at the mercy of a sinister stepmother Angelica and her nasty daughters. As the once-magnificent Megaride and the port around it have sunk into decrepitude, the years have passed – enough years for sullen, silent Mia to reach the cusp of adulthood. Her fate has already been decided upon, however, by her stepmother and Salvatore Lo Giusto, the evil mafioso known as “the King”. Holographic ghosts haunt the hallways of Megaride, but the menace to Mia is all too tangible…
Murder, mayhem, melodrama and musical numbers make fine bedfellows in this noir-stained revisiting of the famous fairy tale, further twisted by its eerie element of sci-fi retrofuturism, and its acerbic slash at contemporary Italy?s social and political ills. The director’s chair is rather crowded but this unorthodox collaboration between Alessandro Rak, Ivan Cappiello, Marino Guarnieri and Dario Sansone – a team that worked together on 2013’s award-winning
THE ART OF HAPPINESS – results in a distinctive work of digital animation, executed with painterly flair and enhanced by a soundtrack of Neapolitan cabaret cool. Sexy, sophisticated, and sharp as a shattered glass slipper,
CINDERELLA THE CAT is a bedtime story for boys and girls with a bit of a bad streak.
