On his birthday, a filmmaker sits by a lake, feeling disheartened. He's been struggling with a screenplay for the better part of a decade, without figuring out how to finish it. And then just like that, he hears a huge explosion, and four mysterious beings show up. Claiming to be fans of his work, they ask to read his latest script, promising to give him a birthday gift in return. And so they — and we in the audience — discover the stories of various people whose birthday falls on the day before the end of the world — namely, a lonely schoolgirl, an exhausted housewife and a depressed teacher.

Interested in the plight of outcasts and wishing for a more humane society, South Korean writer-director Baek Seung-bin (MEMBERS OF THE FUNERAL) came up with this tragicomedy that delves into romance, mystery and fantasy. Its superb ensemble cast features Kang Ha-neul (FORGOTTEN) as the filmmaker, Kim So-hee (THE TRUTH BENEATH) as the schoolgirl, Jang Young-nam (CONFIDENTIAL ASSIGNMENT) as the housewife, and Kim Hak-sun (MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. MO) as the teacher. As implied by the title — which Baek borrowed from an unrelated 1994 Hong Kong — I HAVE A DATE WITH SPRING is more optimistic than most films dealing with the apocalypse. To quote the director's statement, "The world is doomed anyway, so let's all go nicely. And if possible, let's go beautifully." -
