When his father gives him a peculiar pet he found in Chinatown for Christmas, Billy (Zach Galligan) is told that there are three rules about this “mogwai” that must be followed: don’t expose him to bright lights or sunlight; keep him away from water; and most importantly, don’t ever feed him after midnight. Billy takes care of his new furry buddy, who he names Gizmo, but before long, the little thing inadvertently gets wet and spawns a bunch of other mogwai. Worse, the latter end up eating after midnight, and they turn into monsters – the titular gremlins – and all hell breaks loose!
If you’re an ’80s kid, GREMLINS undoubtedly made a big impression on you. Released during the glorious summer of ’84, this Steven Spielberg-produced horror comedy is notable for the witty screenplay by Chris Columbus, the dynamic direction by Joe Dante (who will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at Fantasia this year), the fun supporting performances by stars of the era (Phoebe Cates, Corey Feldman, Judge Reinhold), the lively score by Jerry Goldsmith, as well as the awesome practical effects used to create the utterly cute Gizmo and the absolutely disgusting gremlins. It also features surprisingly nasty splat-stick, so much that it's one of the movies that led to the creation of the PG-13 rating. We’re asking fans to wear their GREMLINS T-shirts, PJs or costumes and to bring their dolls, action figures and other merch to Fantasia’s screening of this classic Joe Dante film, which will be a big nostalgic outdoor party! - Kevin Laforest
